Trondheim Symphony Orchestra Continues Its Partnership with Ståle Kleiberg
A long-standing collaboration between Ståle Kleiberg and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra continues with Across the Ocean towards a Higher Firmament. Conducted by Peter Szilvay, the forthcoming LAWO Classics album brings together the composer’s Third Symphony and two shorter orchestral works.
The orchestra’s involvement with Symphony No. 3 began with its commission. Szilvay also conducted the premiere in April 2025, linking the new recording to the musicians who first presented the work. Written in connection with Norway’s National Jubilee 2030, the symphony addresses the Norwegian emigration to North America that took place during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The programme opens with the 2001 composition Lamento – Cissi Klein in memoriam, followed by The Town and its People, written in 2022. The three-movement symphony then occupies the remainder of the album. Its emotional course moves from yearning through dramatic passages towards a hymn-like conclusion, reflecting the experiences of people leaving Norway for a new life overseas.
Kleiberg’s ties to Trondheim also include his role as Professor Emeritus of Music at NTNU. His internationally acclaimed output includes Requiem – for the Victims of Nazi Persecution and David and Bathsheba. This latest project with the city’s orchestra will be released digitally on August 28, 2026, with the CD edition scheduled for January 2028.
