Nick Williams Transforms Colour and Texture into Immersive Painted Worlds
Cornish artist Nick Williams creates contemporary figurative paintings that are immediately recognisable for their intense colour, layered texture and atmospheric storytelling. Working primarily in oil, he builds richly tactile surfaces that invite viewers not only to look at the image, but also to experience the physical presence of the painting itself.
Williams’ paintings are often developed over long periods, with some individual works evolving over months or even years. His process involves building up heavy impasto layers, sanding areas back and reworking the surface until the painting achieves a robust and distinctive finish. This method gives his work a strong material quality, making texture as important as image, colour and narrative.
Influenced by artists including Vuillard, Velázquez, Van Gogh, Vermeer, Anselm Kiefer, Paula Rego and Peter Doig, Williams combines traditional figurative painting with elements of magic realism. His scenes often feel familiar yet dreamlike, filled with atmosphere, mystery and the suggestion of hidden stories. As he explains, he is “mainly trying to create a feeling of place and atmosphere.”
Based in Cornwall, Williams continues to draw inspiration from the surroundings of his garden studio. His independent, self-taught approach has shaped an original style outside conventional art school traditions. Following milestones such as his 2023 solo exhibition at 54 The Gallery in Shepherd Market, Mayfair, his work continues to attract viewers and collectors drawn to its colour, imagination and unique sense of place.
