Pete Cater Celebrates Jazz Craftsmanship on Upcoming EP West Side Story
Few British jazz drummers have sustained a career with the consistency and independence of Pete Cater. This May, he will add to that legacy with the digital release of his new EP, West Side Story, arriving on May 1st, 2026. The release places Cater’s musicianship, leadership, and creative instincts firmly in the spotlight.
The recording process behind West Side Story is one of its most notable features. Rather than being made in a traditional recording studio, the EP was captured in a school hall during the summer break. The result is described as a rich and professional sound that stands alongside high-end studio productions, proving Cater’s ability to create quality music in distinctive circumstances.
Cater’s background helps explain the depth of experience behind the project. Born in Staffordshire in 1963, he grew up surrounded by jazz and was strongly influenced by his father, who was a semi-professional drummer. He began playing live at a young age, and by his teenage years had already started developing a mature and distinctive sound. His decision to move to London at 29 helped shape the next stage of his career.
Over the years, Cater has earned major recognition within the jazz world. He was voted 5th Best Jazz Drummer in the World by Rhythm Magazine readers and has received honours including Best Big Band at the British Jazz Awards and Best Drummer at the Radio 2 National Big Band Contest. These accolades reflect a career rooted in discipline, versatility, and high musical standards.To accompany the EP, Cater will appear in two live performances under The Great Drum Show. The dates are May 17th at Pizza Express in Soho and May 20th at the Concorde Club in Eastleigh. With West Side Story and these upcoming performances, Cater continues to show that his work remains energetic, relevant, and forward-looking.
