The Influence and Identity of Nick Williams
Nick Williams’ artistic identity has been shaped by a wide range of influences. He has looked to artists including Vuillard, Velázquez, Van Gogh, Vermeer, Anselm Kiefer, Paula Rego and Peter Doig, while developing a visual language that remains personal and independent.
His paintings are contemporary and figurative, yet they often include the atmosphere of magic realism. They suggest places that seem real but are also touched by dream, memory and imagination. This gives his work a strong emotional and narrative quality.
A defining feature of Williams’ art is the surface. His oil paintings are heavily textured, with layers of paint built up, sanded down and reworked. This labour-intensive process can continue over months or years, creating a surface that is both visually rich and physically present.
Williams’ career includes a solo exhibition at 54 The Gallery in Shepherd Market, Mayfair, in 2023. Based in Cornwall, he continues to create paintings that combine atmosphere, colour and storytelling in a way that is immediately recognisable.
