Harry’s House is here and I want to move in

Waking up, I felt like a kid on Christmas, the long awaited release of Harry’s House was here. I had very high expectations. With his self titled debut Harry Styles released in 2017 and Fine Line in 2019. Harry’s House had a lot to live up to. 

Harry gave us a taste of what was to come with lead single ‘As it Was’ a retro styled single fuelled by groovy synths and laid back percussion. Reminiscent of ah-a’s ‘Take On Me’. Accompanying this was an equally colourful music video giving an ode to glam rock culture. 

Sonically, Harry’s House keeps with the retro themes that we previously heard in the lead single, filling the album with 80’s infused bass grooves and retro electric key melodies and layering his vocals with vocoders on certain tracks. 

What Harry’s House does immaculately is vary the emotions throughout the album, leading the listener on a journey from vibing with tracks like ‘Late Night Talking’ and ‘Cinema’ to giving us the heart wrenching ‘Matilda’ and ‘Little Freak’ . 

Harry’s House feels like it’s a further extension of Harry Styles as an artist. Through his early career Harry had the pressure of being a former boyband star, where as by now Harry has proved himself as a credible artist in his own right and Harry’s House is the evidence of an artist who has found freedom and is fully confident in their ability to create a masterpiece. 

If anyone needs me, I’m going to be crying in the foetal position to ‘Matilda’.
