B Green’s Brilliant Reinvention of the Lyric Video

We’ve all seen those terrible fan made videos across YouTube – someone takes their favourite track and for every word the vocalist utters, they find a random image on Google to match – resulting in a dull collage of meaningless pictures that at best do nothing for the music…

Enter B Green, however, with his latest track – in which he takes that exact same formula, and this time, makes it absolutely brilliant…

It’s a true product of the internet age – a music video that takes the form of a series of gifs and repeated clips, with bizarre images that range from loops of 80s Soul Train dancers to a lift from the 90s Disney classic, Pocahontas. Insert into this visual mayhem the ever-moving face of B Green himself, with text leaping on and off the screen – and you find yourself in a bizarre world of reference culture with too much to look at and not enough time…

What’s more is that, beneath this visual feast, there is actually a pretty serious message: B Green is taking aim at the historically heralded figure of Columbus and bringing him down with stunning lyrical grace. This is where the brilliance of the track really lies – the video runs lyrical rings around the symbol of Columbus always coming back to that same line, “I ain’t Christopher Columbus, but I know my way around,” and in doing so he is displaying his humour, talent and thoughtfulness in one 3-minute outburst.
