Originally Rock raised, Ross Davies turned to the beauty that is folk music and showcases his love for the genre through cover single ‘Five and Dime’. ‘Five and Dime’ was originally written by Nanci Griffith and was titled ‘love at the five n dime’.
Ross Davies talks about his inspiration behind the cover song – “ While I was mainly raised on rock music, I nevertheless had a penchant for folk music. This was evident when I first heard Nanci Griffith’s “folkabilly” music on the radio back in the early 1990s, whereby I became a fan of hers ever since. Her music wasn’t just any ordinary folk or country music: What made it uniquely appealing to listen to was a combination of folksy storytelling lyrics, catchy melody, occasional cross-genre folk harmony, and Nanci’s sparkling soft voice with a dash of Texas draw. I heard this more or less on songs of hers such as “Love at the Five and Dime.”

“When Nanci effectively retired from the music business back in 2013 due to health issues, I sort of lost touch with her musical exploits, yet I nevertheless continued to appreciate her music from from time to time by playing albums of hers that I had. It wasn’t until I read the unexpected and sad news of her death back in August 2021, that I took quite a renewed interest in her work. The more I listened to her music again (especially to lesser known songs), and the more I read about her life in relation to her music, then the more I came to appreciate her dedication to music in terms of her having been a songwriter and performing musician.”
Ross Davies has released his new single Five and Dime which is now available on all major streaming platforms.
