Experience the Unique Sound of Open Water’s ‘Above The Waterline
Open Water has just released their latest album – ‘Above The Waterline’ – and industry professionals are already showing huge enthusiasm. Each song has its own character, boasting an original style and voice.
Drawing on influences from rock, blues and jazz traditions, the trio creates musical gems that are both uplifting and healing. With this in mind, we had the pleasure of speaking to Open Water to gain an insight into their creative process. Diving into the album, we asked the band which song was the most exciting to write. ‘I Trust The Road’ – one of the closing tracks – was their unanimous response.
Written in one of Jeff’s alternate guitar tunings, and inspired by Joanne’s reading about the Camino de Santiago, the song has a special atmosphere. With Joanne’s stunning lyrics and Dave Whitford’s powerful double bass lines, it’s a magical number that is perfectly suited to live performances.
The trio’s unique sound is probably best encapsulated in the track ‘Waiting For The Daylight’. Open Water’s style shines out throughout – Jeff’s counterpoint guitar picking, Joanne’s lyrical finesse and Richard’s jazz and bluegrass-influenced lead guitar. These vibrant, emotive songs have no doubt kept their audiences engaged during live shows, and have no doubt become audience favourites.
This fantastic track has a strong Covid-era lyrical context, located around the hope for a better day. We asked the trio what drives them forwards as a band. They highlighted the unique creativity of the group, with each member’s different influences welcomed within each song. Furthermore, Open Water is a creative outlet for each musician, gifted with full access to their individual styles. The creative process of makingAbove The Waterline was special to them all, particularly during these trying Covid times.
