With artists like Bruno Mars bringing 80s funk back into the charts its no surprise that Laurence Preston’s latest track has caused quite a stir among soul and funk fans. Beginning with atmospheric chatter reminiscent of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” the song slips into a solid, bass-heavy groove. There’s a lot going on in the record – the snappy 808 snare hits, the funky one-note guitar riffs and classic wah-wah synth lines weaving between the beat.

The difference between Laurence Preston and other contemporary 80s revival artists like Bruno Mars, however, is that Preston lived and recorded through the height of the funk era – performing since he was a young boy, at the age of 19 Laurence was spotted by Sly & the Family Stone founder, Freddie Stone, which led onto a fruitful career in music including as a member of “Oh Happy Day” singer Dorothy Morrison’s band.

And its that experience in musicianship that sets Laurence Preston apart. He’s not just an incredible singer, but a talented all-round multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and studio-producer. On this exceptional record we can hear not only his vocal talent but also his impressive slap-bass skills which hold together the groove of the track.

With this kind of musical experience we can expect to hear a lot more from Preston hitting the charts…
